The Krodel family of painters (also called Crodel ) is a branch of a humanist family that lived in Weimar before 1500 and belonged to Lucas Cranach's circle .

Relatives

Wolfgang Krodel the Elder is recorded in Schneeberg from 1528 to 1563 , his brother Martin Krodel around 1539. The date of birth of Wolfgang Krodel the Elder . Ä. is not recorded. However, if you take into account that he was buried in Schneeberg on January 5, 1563 and his three earliest surviving paintings date back to 1528, his year of birth can be narrowed down to around 1500 with a high degree of probability. As Junius noted in 1921, there are numerous indications that Krodel started his craft through Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. learned; probably between approx. 1525 and 1528. From this year at the latest he will have been working as a freelance painter in his hometown Schneeberg in the Ore Mountains.

The workshop of Wolfgang Krodel continued Matthias Krodel (1550-1605), then his sons Mat (t) hias († 1601) and Wolfgang. Wolfgang Krodel the Elder Ä. has created numerous works with motifs similar to those of Lucas Cranach the Elder. He orientated himself particularly closely to the Wittenberg master in the pair of pictures Law and Grace, which he signed in 1542 ( St. Annen Monastery Church and Sacral Museum , Kamenz). One of his main works is the Reformation altar in St. Wolfgang's Church in Schneeberg. More of his works are u. a. in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Mathias Krodel the Elder carried out the altar of the church of Syhra , donated by Abraham von Einsiedel in 1586, as well as the altar of the castle chapel of Schönfels Castle on the Pleiße.

In Torgau , Marcus Crodel was the tutor of Martin Luther's son .

In Schneeberg, Wolfgang-Krodel-Strasse commemorates this family, and the Krodel fountain was also located on the market square there until 2005 .

In recent times, the co-founder of the Munich Secession Paul Eduard Crodel , the glass painter Charles Crodel and his wife, the painter Elisabeth Crodel , have become more important.
