Marcus Crodel , also Marx Crodelius (* around 1487 in Weimar ; † March 29, 1549 in Torgau ) was a German teacher and headmaster.

Life

Nothing can be reported about his early training or activity. On October 10, 1520, when Crodel was 33 years old, he was enrolled at the University of Leucorea in Wittenberg, where he certainly studied theology with a focus on. With the acquisition of the bachelor's degree for " artium " on October 7, 1521, Crodel finished his studies. As a result, he is said to have had a job at the Torgau electoral court as a supervisor of the silver collection, which was a position of trust. From 1523 (1526 is also mentioned!) Worked as a teacher at the Latin school in Torgau. Also because of his great learning he was appointed headmaster of the school in 1539 (1537 is also mentioned!). He completely reformed it, so that the Latin school acquired a very good reputation as a humanistic educational institution shaped by the evangelical spirit. This attracted many students.

Like Philipp Melanchthon , Martin Luther sent one of his sons, Johannes and his nephew Florian von Bora, to Torgau for training in August 1542. Very satisfied with the work of Crodel in the spirit of the Reformation, Luther sent him a copy of his latest work “ From the last words of David ” with a handwritten dedication on August 18, 1543 . He had already registered in Crodels' family book - along with other companions of the reformer.

During Crodel's service, Johann Walter set up the first civic choir in Torgau from 1527 , where he must have worked with Crodel in the selection and training of the choirboys. Even more so when Walter worked from 1529 to 1548 in the Latin school as a teacher of singing, religion and Latin. As part of his work, he then set up Germany's first Protestant school choir.

Crodel himself taught Latin, Greek, Hebrew and classical literature at his school. He was the author of several writings, including the Latin-German grammar "Institutiones Grammaticae Latinogermanicae". Crodel was married and left several offspring on his death.
