Albert de Balleroy
Albert Felix Justin de la Cour de Balleroy (born August 15, 1828 in Igé , Orne department , Normandy, † August 10, 1872 in Amblainville , Oise department near Paris) was a French painter.
Albert de Balleroy was born the son of François de la Cour, Marquis de Balleroy (1796-1875) and his wife Adélaïde d'Orglandes (1803-1837). The estate of the noble family was Balleroy Castle in the Calvados department . In addition to an older brother who died as a child, his sister Emilie (1830–1886) also belonged to the family.
Balleroy exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1853 to 1870 . He specialized in depictions of animals and hunting scenes, often choosing hunting dogs as a motif. In February 1856, he and Édouard Manet moved into a studio in Paris on Rue Lavoisier. The poet Charles Baudelaire and the painters Henri Fantin-Latour and Camille Pissarro also frequented this studio . Manet and Balleroy dissolved the studio community in July 1859 after the fifteen-year-old studio assistant Alexandre hanged himself in the rooms. However, both painters remained on friendly terms with each other. Balleroy appears alongside Manet in his 1862 group portrait Music in the Tuileries Garden . Fantin-Latour portrayed the two painters in his painting Hommage à Delacroix in 1864 .
Balleroy married Marie Rosslin d'Ivry (1843-1897) on May 24 of the same year. From this marriage there were four children. During the Paris Commune , he was briefly a member of the French National Assembly when it met in Bordeaux. He died of diphtheria at the age of 42 . Three of his children also fell victim to the disease. Only his son Jacques de la Cour, Marquis de Balleroy (1870-1948) reached adulthood.
Some of his paintings can now be seen in Balleroy Castle. The museums of Caen , Saint-Lô , Bayeux , Saint-Étienne and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris also show his works.
