Joseph Brodtmann
Joseph Brodtmann , also Karl / Carl Joseph / Ioseph Brodtmann (born February 3, 1787 in Überlingen on Lake Constance , † May 14, 1862 in Basel ), was a Swiss draftsman , graphic artist , lithographer , publicist and bookseller . He had German and Swiss citizenship.
Life
Brodtmann moved from Lindau to Zurich in 1817 , where he opened a lithographic printing and publishing house in 1820 . He sold this company to Johann Jakob Honegger in 1830 and opened a lithographic establishment with a book and art shop in Schaffhausen , which from 1838 operated as the Brodtmann'sche Buchhandlung publishing house . From 1840 on he published the daily newspaper for the canton of Schaffhausen . In 1840 he sold the company and worked as an illustrator of art and youth books as well as natural history works for various publishers.

Brodtmann's lithographs were created in the post- Linnaeus Age of Enlightenment . Natural history depictions were created in hand-painted sets for biologists and aristocrats. As patrons of the arts and sciences, the latter were sometimes very interested in fauna and flora . Artists like Brodtmann worked with scientific precision and high aesthetic standards.
Brodtmann's natural history lithographs are included in the works by Heinrich Rudolf Schinz on reptiles and birds published around 1830 . He also published his lithographs in his own works, such as in the book Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreich from 1816. His lithographs are now traded by the most internationally renowned auction houses .
