Henri Le Sidaner

Henri Le Sidaner (born August 7, 1862 in Port Louis , Mauritius , † July 16, 1939 in Paris ) was a French painter.

Life

Le Sidaner was the son of a ship's captain. After the war of 1870/71 , the Le Sidaner family returned to France and settled in Dunkirk ( North Department ). It was there that Le Sidaner received his first artistic lessons from the history painter Alexandre Desmit . With his support, Le Sidaner was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the spring of 1882 and was there a. a. Pupil of Alexandre Cabanel .

With Cabanal's support, Le Sidaner was soon admitted to the major annual exhibitions of the Salon de Paris . Le Sidaner met the taste of the time and was soon able to show artistic and financial successes. In addition to the exhibitions of the Salon, in which he now regularly participated, he was also able to exhibit several times in the galleries of Henri Petit (Paris) and the Goupil Galleries (London).

He made extensive trips to London , New York , Rome and Venice ; but he also repeatedly visited artistically attractive regions in France (coast of Normandy , Pyrenees , Brittany, etc.).

He kept returning to Gerberoy ( Département Oise ) to paint .

In 1930 Henri Le Sidaner was elected to succeed Ernest Laurent in the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

Le Sidaner and his artistic work has already been recognized by Marcel Proust . In the fourth volume of his work In Search of Lost Time (Sodom and Gomorrah) a collector spends large sums of money to purchase Le Sidaner's works.
