Gerberoy is a French municipality with 90 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Oise in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Beauvais and the Canton of Grandvilliers .

Gerberoy is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).

Origin of the place name

Gerboredum 1015, Germanic personal name: Gerbold and Keltisch rito- Furt ( e.g .: Kymrisch rhyd Furt). This word has survived a very long time in Picardy as roy (e.g. in the village name Roy-Boissy ten kilometers from Gerberoy). Many Gallic cities contained the language element rito- : Augustoritum ( Limoges ), Novioritum ( Niort ) etc.

history

In 885, Foulques, first lord of Gerberoy, vassal of the Count of Beauvais , had the first stone castle built, replacing one made of wood. In 912, the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte gave the fortress, which was on the Norman border, strategic importance.

At the end of January or beginning of February 1079 William the Conqueror met his rebellious son Robert Courteouse , who had holed up in the castle, at Gerberoy ; Wilhelm was wounded in the event of a failure . The Battle of Gerberoy took place here during the Hundred Years War in 1435 . In the course of the French Revolution in 1793 Gerberoy was renamed Gerbe la Montagne for anti-royalist reasons , because “-roy” (mod. Roi ) was interpreted as “king”.

Today the place is mainly of tourist importance.
