William Gordon Burn-Murdoch (* 1862 - 19 July 1939 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish painter, lithographer , sculptor and travel writer.

Life and works

Burn-Murdoch attended the Edinburgh Art School and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Charles Verlat ; in Paris he was a student of Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran . He also studied in Florence, Naples and Madrid. 1892-1893 he took part as an artist with his friend William Speirs Bruce on the Dundee Whaling Expedition to Antarctica . He later toured India, China and Greenland.

On his travels, Burn-Murdoch made realistic representations of landscapes and animals. His book publications include:

  • From Edinburgh to the Antarctic (1892/93)
  • Modern whaling and polar bear hunting
  • From Edinburgh to India and Burmah.

The Murdoch Nunatak , an island off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, is named in his honor .
