Dundee Whaling Expedition
The Dundee Whaling Expedition (1892-1893) was an Antarctic expedition for the purpose of exploring the whaling grounds.
On September 6, 1892, a Dundee whaling company decided to take a risk and sent four steam-powered whaling ships - the Balaena , the Active , the Diana and the Polar Star - into the Weddell Sea to look for right whales . On January 8, 1893, Captain Thomas Robertson (1854-1918) discovered the Dundee Island ( 63 ° 30 ′ S , 55 ° 55 ′ W ) from the Active .
