Alexandre Perrier (born May 17, 1862 in Geneva , † May 5, 1936 in Geneva) was a Swiss landscape painter .

Life

After a degree at the Collège de Genève , he worked a short time in a bank before moving to 1881 Mulhouse for training as a textile printing draftsman went.

In 1891 he moved to Paris, where he worked as a fashion illustrator . He discovered the new art movements such as Neo-Impressionism , Symbolism and Art Nouveau . He also painted himself, sometimes during summer stays in Geneva and Upper Savoy , and he exhibited several times at the Salon des Indépendants .

Shortly before the turn of the century, he returned to Geneva, where he stayed until his death. He received a bronze medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . In 1902 he exhibited at the Vienna Secession .

Alexandre Perrier mainly painted mountain landscapes: numerous pictures of the Praz-de-Lys (alpine area above Taninges ), the Salève from Collonges-sous-Salève , the Mont Blanc , Lake Geneva and the Grammont from Montreux . He also painted some symbolic compositions and a couple of portraits .

In the first half of his work he used a pointillism technique reminiscent of Giovanni Segantini or Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo . Later he developed a freer brushstroke, sometimes separating paint and drawing. In contrast to many impressionists, he did not paint his oil paintings in the great outdoors, but in the studio with the help of pencil and pastel sketches .

In 1917 he was elected President of the Geneva Section of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (GSMBA).

A year after his death in 1937, a retrospective was shown at the Musée Rath in Geneva and the Kunsthalle Bern . In 1986/1987 as well as in 2008/2009 special exhibitions about Alexandre Perrier took place in the Art Museum Solothurn and the Musée d'art et d'histoire of Geneva.
