Eduard Pistorius
Eduard Pistorius (born February 28, 1796 in Berlin , † August 20, 1862 in Karlsbad ) was a German genre painter and etcher . He studied in Berlin with Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich (1773-1832) at the academy, from 1818 to 1819 in Dresden . He continued his education through diligent copying in the galleries of the Sanssouci and Dresden palaces . From 1824 he sent the Berlin academy exhibitions. From 1827 to 1830 he was based in Düsseldorf , since then in Berlin, and in 1840 in Rome .

Pistorius leaned closely on Dutch genre pictures of the 17th century , especially Adriaen van Ostade and Gerrit Dou , and painted humorous genre pictures, e.g. B. The Sick Donkey , The Sick Boot and Sound Sleep . With his portrayal of everyday situations he had a great influence on the development of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , for example on Carl Friedrich Lessing , Johann Peter Hasenclever and Theodor Hildebrandt . During this time, topics such as the old farmer at breakfast , the old minstrel , the spelling boy , the drinker at the barrel , the bowling alley and the artist's studio in Düsseldorf emerged . Pistorius is considered to be the Düsseldorf School's earliest genre painter.
Judgment by contemporaries
The Düsseldorf professor Rudolf Wiegmann assessed Eduard Pistorius in 1856 as follows:
“ In his works, Pistorius appears to us as an arch-prose nature, he only makes sense for the trivial, his gaze is only attached to the extreme of the external appearance. He knows how to reproduce this with anxious diligence and sometimes also with skill, but without any deeper thought or sensation under that cover. "
