history

Archaeological finds of stone-age flint show an early settlement of the area around Sainte-Adresse.

The fishing village of Saint-Denis Chef de Caux, which was destroyed by a flood in 1370, was originally located on the site of today's municipality. The name for the inhabitants, Dionysia, is derived from this place. The current place name probably goes back to a beacon that has been on the rocky plateau above the town since 1360, which made it easier for ships to navigate the port of Le Havre . During the Hundred Years War , the English King Henry V landed with his fleet at Sainte-Adresse. The later development of Sainte-Adresse was closely linked to the expansion of the port of Le Havre, only 3 km away. Initially, immigrants from Spain, the Basque Country and Gascony settled in the village and found employment in the port of Le Havre.

In the 19th century, Sainte-Adresse was transformed into a villa suburb of Le Havre. After Le Havre was connected to the French railway network in 1847 and the tram line between Le Havre and Sainte-Adresse was built in the 1870s, Sainte-Adresse developed into a popular seaside resort. One of the most famous holiday guests was the actress Sarah Bernhardt , who had a villa built in the village in 1879 to spend the summer months here. Some important painters also came to Sainte-Adresse and chose the place and its surroundings as a motif for their pictures. These artists included Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot , Alfred Stevens , Albert Marquet, and Raoul Dufy . One of the most famous paintings that originated in Sainte-Adresse is the painting The Terrace of Sainte-Adresse by Claude Monet .

During the First World War , from October 1914 to November 1918, Sainte-Adresse was the seat of the Belgian government in exile under King Albert . During the Second World War , the German occupiers built numerous fortifications as part of the Atlantic Wall to protect the port of Le Havre in the vicinity of Sainte-Adresse .

Charles de Gaulle's parents are buried in Sainte-Adresse.
