Benoît Duteurtre (born March 20, 1960 in Sainte-Adresse , Département Seine-Maritime ) is a French music critic and writer.

Life

Duteurtre is the son of Jean-Claude Duteurtre and his wife Marie-Claire Georges and great-grandson of the politician René Coty . He completed his school days at the Catholic private school, Collège Saint-Joseph in Le Havre .

In 1975 Duteurtre asked the playwright Armand Salacrou to read one of his texts. He was enthusiastic, encouraged him to continue writing and promised to support him as much as possible. Since Duteurtres's musical talent was recognized and promoted at school, he preferred music to writing for the time being. In 1977 he began to study music at the University of Rouen . In the same year he met Karlheinz Stockhausen and the following year Iannis Xenakis . In 1979 Duteurtre took the opportunity to study for a month with György Ligeti and he also received a degree in music.

By his own admission, Duteurtre began to see writing as a kind of counterpoint to music. In 1982 he had Samuel Beckett read his text Nuit and this immediately campaigned for a publication in the Revue Minuit . During this time Duteurtre settled in Paris and performed as a pianist at the Théâtre des Amandiers ( Nantes , Loire-Atlantique ).

As a writer, Duteurtre made a very successful debut in 1985 with his first novel Sommeil . As a result, he published a novel almost every year and also appeared regularly as an essayist to the public. He publishes in literary magazines such as Nouvelle Revue Française , L'Atelier du roman or L'Infini as well as in magazines such as the Revue des Deux Mondes or Commentaire.
