André Messager
André Charles Prosper Messager (born December 30, 1853 in Montluçon , Département Allier , † February 24, 1929 in Paris ) was a French conductor and composer .
André Messager trained as a church musician in Paris, at times as a student of Camille Saint-Saëns , and then worked as an organist and bandmaster at various churches . He devoted himself more and more to composition and made a name for himself in it.
In 1898 Messager became director of the Paris Opéra-Comique , 1901–1906 he was Artistic Director at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, 1907–1913 he was co-director of the Paris Opera . Messager directed the world premiere of Claude Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1902 . As a composer, he has appeared primarily with operettas and ballets . Sometimes the ballet Les deux pigeons (1886) and the operetta Véronique (1898), known as Opéra comique , are still played today .
He also composed collaborative works with other musicians. The parodic potpourri Souvenirs de Bayreuth (1880) is known as a quadrille based on Richard Wagner's melodies , which he created with Gabriel Fauré . In 1926 Messager became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
