Montivilliers

Montivilliers is a French municipality with 15,612 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy in close proximity to Le Havre . It belongs to the canton of Le Havre-2 .

It is known for its abbey from the 7th century ( Monasterii Villare , French Abbaye de Montivilliers ), which probably belonged to the Jumièges Abbey and to which the small town owes its name. This monastery, located near the mouth of the Seine , was destroyed by the Vikings and rebuilt in 1035; it has been gradually being repaired since the late 1970s. The city was detached from County Longueville in 1364 and incorporated into the royal crown domain .

The Brisgaret cemetery, which was laid out in the 15th century, is also a historic monument in the city .

Town twinning

Montivilliers has been a twin town of Nordhorn since 1963 . In addition, relations with Nasséré in Burkina Faso have existed since 2002 as part of development cooperation .
