Jean Lemierre (born June 6, 1950 in Sainte-Adresse , Département Seine-Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region , France ) is a banker , economist and top international civil servant from France. He was President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from July 3, 2000 to July 2, 2008 .

academic career

Lemierre has the classic career of a top French official behind him. He studied economics and law at the Paris Institute of Political Studies ( Institut d'Etudes Politique ) in Paris , also known as “Sciences Po Paris”, then at the French elite academy ENA and then went into civil service.

Professional background

From 1980 to 1989 Lemierre climbed the career ladder in the French tax administration and from 1989 to 1995 was its chief executive as director general of the French tax authorities. In 1995 he served briefly as the cabinet director of the French Minister for Economy and Finance Alain Madelin and his successor Jean Arthuis . He was then director of the French treasury from 1995 to 2000 . At the same time he was a member of the European Monetary Committee from 1995 to 1998 and then until 2000 Chairman of the Economic and Financial Committee of the EU and President of the Paris Club .

On July 3, 2000 Lemierre took office as President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development , EBRD (English. EBRD). He succeeded the future German Federal President Horst Köhler . In 2003 he was briefly head of the European Central Bank and in March 2004 also as a possible successor to Horst Köhler as head of the IMF (Managing Director). After two terms of four years each, Lemierre stepped down as EBRD President on July 2, 2008. He was followed by the German SPD politician Thomas Mirow .

On July 24, 2008, the French bank BNP Paribas announced that Lemierre will take over the post of "Senior Advisor" to its President on September 1, 2008.

On May 2, 2015, the French bank, led by Jean-Laurent Bonnafé and Jean Lemierre, was sentenced again to US $ 140 million by US law enforcement agencies.

Salary / remuneration

According to a report in the French newspaper L'Express in April 2008, the EBRD President's salary is € 428,000 per year, plus a company apartment in London and a company car with driver.
