André Durand (lithographer)
André Durand (born May 5, 1807 in Amfreville-la-Mi-Voie in the Seine-Inférieure department , † August 10, 1867 in Paris ) was a French painter, draftsman and lithographer of the 19th century.
Life
Durand attended the art school in Rouen , where he became a student of Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois (1777-1837). He specialized in drawings and lithographs of old monuments, which he repeatedly showed in the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1864 . On behalf of the large Russian industrialist and patron Anatole Demidoff di San Donato , who lives in Paris and Florence , he traveled to Russia in 1839 and made 100 lithographs there for his work Voyage pittoresque et archéologique en Russie (1840), which was published in Paris . On the way to Russia, Durand came through northern Germany and made imaginative views of the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck as well as other places on his route. The staffage figures in the pictures of his journey were added by Auguste Raffet (1804–1860) after his return home . Around 1850 he worked again for Demidoff. First he took pictures of monuments in Belgium, later views of Demidoff's second center of life, Florence, and the surrounding Tuscany. As a member of the French Committee of Ancient Antiquities, he wrote writings and essays on this subject.
