Roebling's son Washington Augustus took over the management of the project after the death of his father the previous year. The bridge over the East River is planned as a combined suspension and cable-stayed bridge and is one of the oldest suspension bridges of this type in the USA. The up to 23 m deep construction pits for the foundations of the towers and the anchors are excavated with the help of caissons , a method used for the first time in the USA, which is not yet fully mastered and the medical problems of which are not yet understood at all. During the five years of civil engineering work, there were repeated accidents and cases of decompression sickness .

painting
On July 31, the painter Adolph von Menzel witnessed a crowd cheering on the Prussian king on Berlin's boulevard Unter den Linden at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War - and kept the scene in the oil painting the departure of King Wilhelm I the following year Army on July 31, 1870 .
Edouard Manet paints the landscape Effet de neige à Petit-Montrouge . The 59.7 × 49.7 cm picture, painted in oil on canvas, shows a wintry view of Petit-Montrouge , a district in the 14th arrondissement of Paris . Manet created this painting as a national guard during the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War . Unlike the history painters of his time, Manet does not show a heroic battle in this picture, but the gloomy mood of a day of war. The picture reflects Manet's hopelessness with regard to the military situation, his perceived loneliness and the privations he suffered. It is one of the few landscape paintings in the artist's oeuvre and one of the first works that Manet paints in the wild.
Henri Fantin-Latour paints in oils on canvas Un atelier aux Batignolles . The 204 × 273.5 cm picture shows the painter Édouard Manet , surrounded by colleagues and admirers, in a studio in the artists' quarter Quartier des Batignolles . Next to Manet is the art critic, journalist, poet, composer, painter and sculptor Zacharie Astruc . Behind the two stand from left to right the painters Otto Scholderer and Pierre-Auguste Renoir , the art critic and writer Émile Zola , Renoir's friend and patron Edmond Maître, and the painters Frédéric Bazille and Claude Monet . The young generation of painters depicted in the painting was largely known in Paris at the end of the 1860s, but so far without any notable success with the public and critics. In the Un atelier aux Batignolles , Fantin-Latour tries to portray the painters, also known as “Bande à Manet”, as serious artists and members of the bourgeoisie . Fantin-Latour's painting style is traditional and is reminiscent of 17th century Dutch paintings. With this painting he tries to underline the seriousness of his painter friends and to avoid any appearance of rebellion, but he does not succeed in achieving this effect. The success for the painter friends only arose at the end of the 1870s.
