life and work

Monument to Margrave Heinrich II. Jasomirgott

Franz Melnitzky received his training in Olomouc and Vienna, made a study trip to Germany (1851), then he set up his own studio. Soon he was given sculptural tasks for important locations in Vienna, including the monument to Margrave Heinrich II Jasomirgott for the Elisabethbrücke (today Rathausplatz), the sculptures on the Aspernbrücke (which symbolized war, peace, fame, prosperity and in front of which stone lions were placed) .

There are four Melnitzky statues on the outside of the building directly above the entrance to the Hotel Imperial . These portal figures represent the allegories of the ruler's virtues: (from left to right) wisdom, honor, justice and strength.

For example, he created the front gable panel with the theme of Orpheus in the Underworld for the new building of the Musikverein , and also the entrance portal for the spectacular Roman Bath at Praterstern in 1873.

At the north-west station , Melnitzky statues, which were allegories of the cities of the north- west railway, adorned the departure side of the portal.

Among other things, he created the statues on the high altar of the parish of St. Othmar under the white tanners in Vienna-Landstrasse .

An important student of Melnitzky was Karl Costenoble .
