Václav Levý
Václav Levý , also Wenzel Lewy (* 14. September 1820 in Nebřežany (Bruck, District Kralowitz) in Bohemia ; † 30th April 1870 in Prague ) was a Czech sculptor of romance .
Life
Wenzel Lewy (Levy), the son of a shoemaker in Bruck, Kralowitz district in the Plass ( Plasy ) rule, first created carvings after an apprenticeship as a carpenter . He created his first stone works in the rock near Liboch ( Liběchov ) and made the acquaintance of the Czech revival movement . On the recommendation and with the support of his discoverer, the sugar manufacturer and patron Anton Veith , the owner of the manor and castle Liboch , Levý studied with Ludwig Schwanthaler at the academy in Munich from 1845 to 1850 . After his return to Bohemia, however, he received almost no commissions worth mentioning and only created two sculptures over the next five years.
From 1854 to 1865 Wenzel Lewy went to Rome for a stay, supported by a grant from Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer . His works created there impress with their monumentality, their synthesis of folk art and baroque . He returned to Prague four years before his death in 1870, where he became the teacher of Josef V. Myslbek and the founder of the modern Czech school of sculpture.
Václav (Wenzel) Levý died at the age of 49 and was buried in the Vyšehrad Cemetery (Slavin Cemetery) in Prague .
