Antonín Slavíček (born May 16, 1870 in Prague , Austria-Hungary , † February 1, 1910 , ibid) was a Czech painter.

Life

In 1887 he began studying at the Academy výtvarných umění (Academy of Fine Arts) in Prague and chose landscape painting as a specialty under Professor Julius Mařák . After the professor's death, Slavíček was temporarily entrusted with the management of the school. He tried to get a professorship, which he did not get, mainly because the subject was closed. On August 10, 1909 , he suffered a stroke while bathing . A long period of rehabilitation followed. His right hand was paralyzed and he was trying to paint with his left. However, he was so disappointed with the results that he shot himself. He is buried in the Olšany Cemetery in Prague.

He left behind his wife Bohumila Brynychová, who was portrayed in many of his pictures, and his son, the painter Jan Slavíček, along with two other children . His brother-in-law was the legionary poet Rudolf Medek . His grandchildren, the painter Mikuláš Medek and the politician Ivan Medek are also known . His widow married the painter Herbert Masaryk in 1911 .

Slavicek is one of the leading exponents of Czech art at the beginning of the 20th century. His early pictures belonged to the realism art direction . He was a master in the play of light and shadow. In later works he encountered French impressionism . In his last works he found his own style. He was enthusiastic about the landscape of the Vysočina region , in which he often stayed and which he immortalized in many pictures.
