- April 4 : The architect Eduard van der Nüll takes his own life because of the negative reviews of the new building of the Vienna Court Opera , which is still under construction . His partner August Sicard von Sicardsburg dies only a few weeks later, so that neither of the two architects will see the building completed in 1869 .
- May 16 : Construction of the Národní divadlo in Prague begins. Josef Zítek is the architect of the neo-renaissance building. The foundation stone came to Prague on May 5th from Radhošť in Moravia . Other stones from Bohemian mountains such as Říp , Vyšehrad or Blaník follow. The laying of the foundation stone will be celebrated in the presence of 100,000–150,000 spectators.
- August 14 : In Goslar , construction work to restore the Imperial Palace begins after a demolition planned a few years earlier was averted.
- September 1st : After Emperor Franz Joseph I set the keystone , the Künstlerhaus Wien , built by August Weber , opens after a three-year construction period. The building is based on the style of an Italian Renaissance villa by Jacopo Sansovino .
- The Uspensky Cathedral in Helsinki , built in the Russian-Byzantine style , is consecrated.

- Pierre-Auguste Renoir's painting In Summer shows the portrait of his lover Lise Tréhot and, in contrast to many of his earlier works, was positively received by the critics, but without any financial success.
- Gustave Courbet paints La femme à la vague in oil on canvas . The picture belongs to a series of nudes that Courbet created between 1864 and 1868. As is so often the case during this period, Joanna Hifferan is the model.
- Édouard Manet paints the portrait of Mademoiselle Claus and begins with the painting The Balcony .
- Édouard Manet met his two painters, Edma and Berthe Morisot , through their mutual friend Henri Fantin-Latour in the Louvre . Berthe will be his preferred model for the next few years.

- June 25th : The Luther monument in Worms designed by Ernst Rietschel is inaugurated.

- The painter Rodolphe Julian founds the Académie Julian art academy in Paris' 2nd arrondissement .
- Belgian avant-garde artists , including Constantin Meunier and Félicien Rops , found the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in Brussels .
