Giuseppe Abbati (born January 13, 1836 in Naples , † February 21, 1868 in Florence ) was an Italian painter .

He was a representative of the Macchiaioli group . His main works are landscape paintings and genre paintings. Many of these pictures were taken in the open air.

Life

Born in Naples in 1836, the son of the painter Vincenzo Abbati moved with his family to Florence in 1842 and to Venice in 1846 , where he initially worked under the guidance of his father, then, again in Florence, from 1850 at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno under Michelangelo Grigoletti and Francesco Bagnara developed his artistic style.

In 1858 the family returned to Naples, where Giuseppe exhibited in the Royal Museum the following year. In 1860 he took part in the procession of a thousand , in the process he lost an eye during a battle on the Volturno. At the end of the year he moved to Florence again and became a member of the artists' circle at Caffè Michelangelo .

In 1866 he took part in the Third Italian War of Independence , was captured in the Battle of Custozza and interned in Croatia. In December 1866 he returned to Florence. On February 21, 1868, Giuseppe Abbati committed suicide to avoid the agonizing death of a rabies infection that he had contracted as a result of a dog bite. He is buried in the Cimitero delle Porte Sante cemetery.
