Johann Nepomuk Zwerger (born April 28, 1796 in Donaueschingen , † June 26, 1868 in Cannstatt ) was a German sculptor and university professor .
life and work
The son of a government employee attended high school in Donaueschingen . A scholarship from Prince von Fürstenberg enabled him to stay in Johann Heinrich Dannecker's Stuttgart studio , where he learned the craft of sculpting. It was there in 1819 that he met the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen , whom he visited in Rome in 1823 . He received the order from him to make a marble statue of the evangelist Markus for the funerary chapel on the Württemberg of Queen Katharina in Rotenberg based on his sketch .
In the following years he made further marble works, which he brought to the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main in 1830 , at whose art school he received a teaching position for modeling and sculpture. Relations with the Städel drew him more and more from Stuttgart to Frankfurt. The institute gave him a professorship and held a jubilee ceremony in his honor in 1854 because of his services to the institute. Zwerger worked in the position as a teacher at the Städel until the spring of 1866, when he resigned for reasons of age. He died two years later in his Swabian homeland and was buried in the Uffkirchhof cemetery in Cannstatt (the grave in Department F - now Department 10 - has been new since 1913, most recently by a member of the Daimler family).
In addition to his teaching activity, Zwerger mainly made portrait busts, such as those of the Freiburg Rotteck monument . Other works were a colossal stone crucifix with Maria and Johannes in the new Frankfurt main cemetery (1840), which was later followed by two angel heads for the portal, and three sandstone figures for the Frankfurt stock exchange . Under his leadership, by the Frankfurt sculptor was Charles Edward Wendel city (1815-1841) began sculpture of Charlemagne completed by Wendel City's death, until its demolition in 1914 on a central pillar of the Old Bridge was set up in Frankfurt and since before the Historical Museum is .
