Ștefan Luchian (born February 1, 1868 in Ștefăneşti ; † June 27, 1916 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian painter .

Major Dumitru Luchian's son came to Bucharest with his family in 1873. Here he attended high school from 1879 and from 1885 the Școala de belle arte . At the same time he began studying the flute at the city conservatory . From 1889 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Johann Caspar Herterich . From 1891 to 1893 he stayed in Paris, where he was a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian .

Luchian's first known picture, a small oil painting, dates from 1884. A first exhibition of his pictures took place in 1890 in the Bucharest Cercul artistic . After his return from Paris, he participated again with several paintings in an exhibition of the Cercul artistic . The following year he was a member of the jury of the Expoziția anuală a artiștilor în viață (“Annual Exhibition of Living Artists”), which took place for the first time in fourteen years and in which he was represented with eight of his own paintings. In addition, he organized joint exhibitions in a studio in Bucharest with Titus Alexandrescu (1894) and Constantin Artachino (1895).

In 1897 he signed a contract with Artachino and C. Pascali for the painting of the Cathedral of Alexandria , together with Artachino another contract for the painting of the Cathedral of Tulcea . At the beginning of 1898 he was involved in the opening exhibition of the artist society Ileana with 21 paintings. Between May and September of that year, he painted the Alexandria Cathedral.

Luchian fell seriously ill at the end of the year, the first outbreak of a spinal cord infection that ultimately led to his early death. In May and June 1899 he painted the Tulcea Cathedral. In the same year he participated again in the Expoziția anuală a artiştilor în viață . Two of his works were selected for the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris and shown at the Exposition Décennale des Beaux Arts .

In 1900 the first edition of the Revista literară și artistică “Ileana” appeared , for the artistic part of which Luchian was responsible. In 1901 he completed the painting of the Brezoianu Church in Bucharest. In May of that year he participated for the first time with eleven works in a painting and sculpture exhibition at the Bucharest Ateneu . At the end of 1901 he became seriously ill and paralyzed in the Pantelimon Hospital in Bucharest, which he could not leave until March of the following year.

In 1903 Luchian was one of the participants in the international art exhibition in Athens, and in the following year he had two personal exhibitions at the Ateneu. In 1905 his painting Crizanteme was shown in the permanent exhibition of the Hamburger Kunstverein . He was regularly represented at the exhibitions of the Tinerimea artistică ("Artistic Youth"). Further personal exhibitions at the Ateneu took place in 1907, 1908, 1910 and 1914.

In 1909 Luchian was awarded the Medalia Bene Merenti First Class. When the Simu Museum opened in 1910, twelve of his works were shown. In 1911 his health had deteriorated so much that he was admitted to the Dr. Margaritarescu sanatorium . His last works were created around 1913. Rumors that he was going to let someone paint under his name earned him a fraud charge.

His life was the subject of the film Luchian , which the director Nicolae Mărgineanu shot with Ion Caramitru in the lead role in 1981.
