Shogun is the fourth studio album by the US thrash metal band Trivium . It was released on September 26, 2008 via Roadrunner Records . The album title is derived from the old Japanese military title Shogun , which portrayed a leader of the samurai warrior caste .

Emergence

Trivium wrote intermittently for over a year on the titles for their fourth album. In contrast to the previous album The Crusade , the band did not pursue any particular goal. The band wrote about 40 songs during the concert tours. Among these songs is a cover version of the song "Iron Maiden" by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden of the same name . This cover version is used for the sampler "Maiden Heaven" of the English magazine Kerrang .

The band used acoustic guitars for the first time when composing and largely used seven-string electric guitars , which were previously only played on The Crusade . Of the 40 songs written, 27 were eventually completed. The best 20 songs in the band's opinion were recorded as a demo . With the help of machine-head singer Robb Flynn , Trivium finally selected 14 songs, which were recorded on a second demo. Then the band went to the studio.

The band wanted to break new ground for Shogun and therefore decided to work in a different studio with another producer. Was added Shogun between 31 March and 19 May 2008 in Nashville . Originally, the majority of the recordings were supposed to take place in a studio in New York and finish in Nashville. However, with the studio closed, these plans were discarded.

The album was produced by Nick Raskulinecz , who has already worked for bands such as the Foo Fighters , Stone Sour , Marilyn Manson and Rush . According to Heafy, Raskulinecz has a wide musical spectrum and brought many new ideas. Modern techniques like Pro Tools were not used for the recordings . The eleven songs that finally made it onto the album were played completely live up to forty times.

“Individual parts were not pushed back and forth or doubled on the computer. Nick let us stand in front of the mics until he and we felt that we had caught the perfect moment. "

- Matthew Heafy on the recordings

"The Calamity" ( English for The disaster was) according Heafy the easiest-to-play song of the album. Still, it took the band forever to record the song. The theme song is the first song in the band's history to last longer than ten minutes. Shogun was mixed by British music producer Colin Richardson in London .

Heafy got the idea for the album title during a trip to his native Japan . The tour guide mentioned the word "Shogun" several times and Heafy noticed that the word exudes strength. According to Heafy, the word "Shogun" fits the music on the album perfectly.

background

The band drew inspiration from Greek and Japanese mythology for the song titles and lyrics . Scylla and Charybdis were sea monsters that lived in the Strait of Messina . The furies were goddesses of revenge. Prometheus is considered to be the creator of humans and animals in Greek mythology , while Callisto was one of the lovers of the god father Zeus . The Odyssey of the Greek poet Homer had a great influence here .

"Kirisute Gomen" refers to a Japanese law that allowed a samurai to strike down a socially inferior person with his sword, should this violate his honor.

reception

In the German magazine Metal Hammer reached Shogun second place in the sound check. According to Frank Thiessies, Trivium have "never been so far removed from thrashy triviality as on this triumphant album without a trailer". Thiessies awarded six out of seven points. In the soundcheck of the German rock-hard magazine, Shogun took fourth place. Reviewer Thomas Kupfer wrote that "this sovereign and never added stylistic diversity makes Shogun the best album in the band's history to date and gives an idea of the almost unlimited musical possibilities of the band members".
