Robert Conrad "Robb" Flynn (born July 19, 1968 in Oakland , California as Lawrence Matthew Cardine ) is an American singer and guitarist . He is a member of the metal band Machine Head and previously played with Forbidden and Vio-lence .

Life

Robb Flynn was born Lawrence Matthew Cardine and was adopted for adoption at six months of age . He has never seen his birth parents again since then. His current name was given by his adoptive parents. Flynn grew up first in San Lorenzo and later in Fremont . At the age of five, Flynn was molested by a member of his family. Flynn attended American High School in Fremont, where it was considered a troublemaker and regularly skipped classes to make music in his adoptive parents' garage. As a young adult, Flynn used large amounts of alcohol and other drugs . Shortly before the release of the first Machine Head album Burn My Eyes , he overdosed on heroin and barely survived. In the late 1990s, Flynn completed therapy and then began to deal with his personal problems in his texts. He also suffered from bulimia . Flynn has been married since 2000 and has two sons. In November 2012, Machine Head had to cancel several concerts because Flynn had to undergo emergency surgery for an inguinal hernia .

Musical career

Forbidden Evil

Flynn began playing guitar while in high school and later joined the band Forbidden Evil , later renamed Forbidden. Just before Forbidden went into the studio to record their debut album Forbidden Evil , Flynn left the band and joined the band Vio-lence. He was of the opinion that Vio-lence was the better band and that he could achieve more with this band. With “Chalice of Blood”, “Forbidden Evil” and “As Good as Dead” three compositions by Flynn are represented on Forbidden Evil . At that time he lived with Paul Bostaph in an apartment and was constantly under drugs such as Speed .

Vio- lence

When Flynn joined Vio-lence, the material for the debut album Eternal Nightmare was already written. In an interview, Flynn recalled that his bandmates, including today's Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel , made it clear that Flynn was the new guy and should hold back on songwriting for now . For the song "Calling in the Coroner" written by Flynn he got no credits. Eternal Nightmare sold about 30,000 times. On the second studio album Oppressing the Masses Flynn had a larger share. Since Oppressing the Masses sold worse than the previous album, Vio-lence lost the record deal. The band signed with Megaforce Records , which pushed Vio-lence more towards rock and grunge . When his bandmates rejected the song "Blood for Blood" written by Flynn, Flynn formed his own band, Machine Head. Three weeks later, Flynn and two friends got into a mass brawl with a gang notorious in Oakland . One of Flynn's friends stabbed some of the attackers with a knife . Knowing that Flynn was playing for Vio-lence, the gang members threatened the club owner just before a Vio-lence concert that they would throw hand grenades on the stage during the concert . Flynn left the band and was only able to leave his apartment hooded for the next few months.

Machine head

Together with his friend, bassist Adam Duce , Flynn decided on October 12, 1991 after a Metallica concert that the Machine Head project should become a real band. Duce's friend Logan Mader and drummer Tony Constanza completed the first band line-up. With Machine Head, Flynn released nine studio albums that sold over 2.4 million copies worldwide. He has been producing his band's albums since the 2003 album Through the Ashes of Empires . In 2007 the song "Aesthetics of Hate" was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Metal Performance . In late 2008, Flynn left his band briefly after an argument between him and Adam Duce. With the help of a therapist, both worked on their problems together.

Other Projects

In 1994 Flynn briefly belonged to the musical project Sexoturica , in which the former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and the Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser were active. Flynn also played in the band Quarteto de Pinga . Little is known about his role in this band. On the home video Live Intrusion by the band Slayer, which appeared in 1995, Flynn can be heard as singer and guitarist on the song "Witching Hour", a cover version of the Venom song. In 2005, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary , Roadrunner Records released the compilation Roadrunner United , for which Flynn was chosen as so-called "team captains" alongside Joey Jordison , Matthew Heafy and Dino Cazares . Flynn wrote and produced four songs and can be heard as singer and guitarist on the song "The Dagger". In 2018 Flynn produced the sixth studio album by the band Sworn Enemy .
