Is There Anybody Out There? is a song by the American thrash metal band Machine Head .

Emergence

Singer Robb Flynn had the idea for the song on the flight home after an eight-week tour through Eastern Europe . Although he didn't really want to write new music, he remembered a vocal melody during the flight, which he saved on his iPhone . At home he worked on the song together with drummer Dave McClain . Flynn announced in advance that the single would stand for itself.

“You don't have to release an album in 2016; you can just record a song and publish it. This is one of the coolest things the internet has made possible. "

- Robert Flynn

The song was recorded in October 2015 at Trident Studios in Martinez . The song was released on June 3, 2016 as a download and on July 29, 2016 as a 7 ″ single .

background

According to singer Robb Flynn, the song is about " love , loneliness , racism and the lack of understanding of what is going on in the world / America". But it also refers to "current events, but would aim at something superordinate". In part, Flynn drew inspiration from the events of the Dimebash 2016 festival held in honor of Dimebag Darrell , where former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo first shows the Hitler salute and later shouts the words White Power to the audience.

In response, changed Flynn the second verse of the song and relates with the words Ashamed of the racists I used to call brothers ( Engl. : Shamed by the racists I called brothers ), referring to the said incidents. Flynn subsequently published on the platform YouTube a video entitled Racism in Metal (ger .: racism in Metal ) in which he firstly Anselmo criticized fact, on the other hand, the metal fans criticized that neither fans nor other bands against Anselmo make racist statements and acts. There is no place for racism in metal and Machine Head won't play any more Pantera songs. Flynn claims to have received over 1,000 death threats as a result.

"If this had been Chad of Nickelback , if this had been Justin Bieber , if this had been Tom Brady , if this had been Lars Ulrich , heads would have been rolling."
