Supercharger is the fourth studio album by the American Metal - band Machine Head . It was released on October 2, 2001 via Roadrunner Records and was the last Machine Head album with guitarist Ahrue Luster . Supercharger is the machine-head album with the lowest sales figures and has meant that the band has since become without a contract.

Emergence

Machine Head toured for about a year for the album The Burning Red and then began writing the new songs. The band wrote a total of 21 songs. For the first time, drummer Dave McClain contributed some ideas. In winter 2000/2001 the band recorded demos for 14 songs and had riffs ready for four more songs. Recordings began in February 2001 at the Indigo Ranch studio in Malibu . The drums and bass were recorded in the Mad Dog studio. Drummer Dave McClain only needed three days for his parts and had most of the songs ready after the first take . In addition to the 14 songs on the regular album version, the song was ten fold and Black Sabbath - cover Hole in the Sky added. These two songs can be found on the digipack version of the album along with live versions of The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears and Desire to Fire .

The album was produced by Johnny K, who previously produced bands like Disturbed and 3 Doors Down . The band turned down an offer from producer Bob Rock (including Metallica and Bon Jovi ). Mixed was Supercharger from Britons Colin Richardson . The music video that was shot for the song Crashing Around You was taken out of service by most television stations because of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .

The album title describes the emotional state of the band members at the time. According to Flynn, the band was electrified and wanted to capture this for the recordings.

The song Only the Names deals with substance abuse , especially the drugs heroin and speed . Flynn designed the text to be about temptation in general so as not to offend anyone. American High is an autobiographical text about Flynn's school days. At that time, he regularly disrupted classes and made his friends skip to play music in his father's garage.

Flynn designed the lyrics so that you only find out what the song is about at the end of a song. He got the inspiration for this from Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler . Flynn filled three notebooks with texts and kept changing the texts or discarding ideas when he got stuck.

The digipak version of the album also contains the songs Hole in the Sky (cover version of Black Sabbath ), Ten Fold and live versions of the songs The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears and Desire to Fire as a bonus

Supercharger received mostly good reviews from the press, but they were worse than its predecessors. Rock Hard's Thomas Kupfer awarded nine out of ten points and described Supercharger as "an enormously multi-faceted album that grows with every run and comes up with additional surprises". In the Metal Hammer Soundcheck, the album came eighth, the worst place in the band's history. Matthias Weckmann awarded five out of seven points and criticized the disorientation of the songs.

Supercharger entered the German album charts at number 25 . In Austria the album reached number 33 and in the United Kingdom number 34. For the first time the band managed to enter the Swiss album charts, where Supercharger reached 88th place. In the US, the album ranked 155, the lowest in the band's history.

With 250,000 units sold worldwide, Supercharger is the lowest-selling album in the band's history to date. In the United States, the album sold about 50,000 copies by July 2003, which was two-thirds fewer than The Burning Red .
