Texts

According to Matt Heafy, the themes from Ascendancy to The Crusade have shifted from his personal experiences to societal and human issues. Some songs on the album relate to murder cases that have caused a great social stir.

Entrance of the Conflagration

This song is about Andrea Yates , who drowned her five children in a bathtub on July 20, 2001. After all of the children died, she called the ambulance and was arrested immediately afterwards.

In court , Yates stated that she suffered from postpartum psychosis associated with a mental illness . The court sentenced Yates to life imprisonment. On January 9, 2006, the life sentence was converted into a suspended sentence in an appeal hearing with the condition that Andrea Yates be treated in a psychiatric hospital .

Unrepentant

The Pakistani Nazir Ahmad (40) killed his three daughters and his stepdaughter Muqadas Bibi in front of his wife. Bibi (25) married against her stepfather's will. When she was asleep, Ahmad slit her throat with a machete . Immediately afterwards, Ahmad also killed his three biological daughters. He wanted to prevent her from marrying against his will. He was arrested a day later. He told the police that his act was an honor killing .

Sadness Will Sear

Matthew Shepard was victim of a robbery on the night of October 6-7, 1998 , of which he died five days later. The case caused quite a stir because Shepard died because of his homosexuality . Shepard was tied to a fence by the perpetrators (Aaron James McKinney and Russel Arthur Henderson), hit on the head with a pistol and finally left to his fate.

In court, McKinney and Henderson said they felt threatened by Shepard's homosexuality. Eventually Henderson confessed and was sentenced to two life terms without early release. McKinney was also sentenced to two life sentences without early release for willful murder.

Contempt Breeds Contamination

The Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo, 24, was shot dead by four police officers on February 4, 1999. Diallo was mistaken for a serial rapist in New York and should be arrested. During the conversation with the police, Diallo grabbed his jacket, which is why the officers assumed he would pull a gun and fire at him. They fired 41 shots and killed the unarmed man with 19 hits.

The police officers were acquitted in the appeals court after an initial guilty verdict. They stated that they shot out of fear of attack alone.

Anthem (We are the Fire)

The first single reached number 40 on the UK singles chart. In addition to the title track, there are two songs that cannot be found on the album.
