Rodolphe Julian
Rodolphe Julian (born June 13, 1839 in Lapalud , † February 2, 1907 in Paris ) was a French painter and founder of the Académie Julian in Paris. He was married to the painter Amélie Beaury-Saurel and is the uncle of the writer André Corthis (née Andrée Magdeleine Husson; 1882–1952).
biography
Julian was born out of wedlock, his mother, Sophie Favier (1810–1889) did not marry Pierre Louis Julian (born 1800), known as Julian the Elder, until 1847. The father was a tobacco retailer and clerk in a bookstore in Marseille . Talented in drawing, Julian went to Paris , where he became a student of Léon Cogniet , professor at the École des Beaux-Arts , without being enrolled there.
In 1863 he exhibited in the salon for the first time . Specializing in genre paintings and portraits, Julian is a typical representative of salon painting . In 1868 he founded a private art academy, the Académie Julian , which also offered foreign artists and women in the arts who had little access to the official art academy the opportunity to work under supervision.
