Amélie Beaury-Saurel (* 1848 in Barcelona ; † May 30, 1924 in Paris ) was a French painter of Spanish origin.

Life

Amélie Beaury-Saurel received her first drawing lessons from a local painter who urged her to continue studying in Paris . She later studied at the renowned Académie Julian , with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre , Tony Robert-Fleury and Jean Paul Laurens . Beaury-Saurel soon became close friends with her classmates Louise-Cathérine Breslau and Marie Bashkirtseff . In 1874 Beaury-Saurel first exhibition took place in the Salon de Paris , in which she took part regularly until 1895. During this time she opened her first studio in Paris and gained a reputation as a well-known portrait painter.

In 1895 Amélie Beaury-Saurel married the painter and founder of the Académie Julian , Rodolphe Julian (1839–1907). The marriage, which all reports said was a happy one, had two children. After the death of her husband, she bought the Château Julian in Lapalud, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , where she lived until shortly before her death.
