Alessandro Abate

Alessandro Abate (* 1867 in Catania ; † 1952 ibid) was an Italian painter in Sicily .

Life

Abate was a pupil of Antonino Gandolfo in Catania and in Naples of Vincenzo Marinelli . On a scholarship from his hometown, he went to Rome , where he attended the schools of the Museo Artistico Industriale together with Francesco Jacovacci and finally became a student at the Accademia di San Luca .

In 1890 he took part in the Belliniana in Catania, in 1895 he was represented at the National Exhibition in Rome, in 1902 at the Quadrinale d 'arte decorativa moderna in Turin and in 1907 at the Agricola Siciliana in Catania. During this time he returned to Catania.

Abate was an internationally acclaimed Art Nouveau painter who created altarpieces, genre scenes and portraits, as well as frescoes for palaces and churches. As a fresco painter, he also worked on public commissions in Tripoli , Alexandria and Tunis . His paintings have been shown at international exhibitions in Santiago de Chile and Paris , and in 2006 Catania dedicated a comprehensive retrospective to him in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna “Le Ciminiere”.
