Antonino Gandolfo
Antonino Gandolfo (born October 20, 1841 in Catania ; † March 20, 1910 ibid) was an Italian painter in Sicily .
Life
After initial training with his uncle, the portrait painter Giuseppe Gandolfo (1792–1855), he went to Florence in 1860 , where he studied under Stefano Ussi (1822–1901) and established a friendly relationship with the later Nobel laureate Giosuè Carducci (1835–1907).
At the end of 1861 he returned to Catania and was able to record his first successes with his painting.
Through his friendship with the writers Mario Rapisardi , Giovanni Verga and Luigi Capuana , who are considered to be the main representatives of literary verism , he turned to socially critical realism and expressive portraiture in his genre paintings.
Antonino Gandolfo taught at the Scuola d'Arte e Mestieri in Catania. He was the teacher of Alessandro Abate .
In 2010 the city of Aci Castello dedicated a comprehensive retrospective to him in the Palazzo Russo on the occasion of the hundredth year of his death.
