Stefano Ussi
Stefano Ussi (born September 3, 1822 in Florence , † July 11, 1901 there ) was an Italian landscape painter , watercolorist, and history and portrait painter who later turned to Orientalism .
Life
Stefano Ussi learned his craft from 1837 to 1850 - with two interruptions - at the Florentine Academy with Pietro Benvenuti , Giuseppe Bezzuoli and Enrico Pollastrini (1817–1876). From 1838 to 1840 he was expelled and in 1848 he took part in the war of liberation against the Austrians . In Montanara , his volunteer association was defeated. In Theresienstadt imprisoned, he returned to Florence in 1849. In 1849 he received an honorary award from his academy for raising Lazarus from the dead . In Rome he was able to continue his education with a scholarship from 1854 to 1856. From 1859 he worked again in Florence.
Stefano Ussi became famous in 1861 with his painting The Expulsion of the Duke of Athens from Florence - painted after a historical event from the 14th century. The work received an award in Paris in 1867 . Stays in Egypt in 1869 and in Morocco in 1874 and 1882 marked the artistic turn to Orientalism.
His students were Federigo Andreotti (1847-1930), Giovanni Boldini , Domenico Bruschi (1840-1910) and Antonino Gandolfo .
Stefano Ussi found his final resting place on the Florentine Cimitero delle Porte Sante.
