Pietro Benvenuti (born January 8, 1769 in Arezzo , † February 3, 1844 in Florence ) was an Italian portrait and history painter of classicism .

life and work

Benvenuti was a student of two painters in Rome (Cavallini and Lapis) who are still unknown to today's research , before he went to Jacques-Louis David in Paris in 1810 and joined his school. By Elisa Bonaparte , regent of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany , Benvenuti was appointed professor at the Accademia di San Luca in Florence in 1803 , after earning an important reputation for two paintings for the Arezzo Cathedral . He received further awards from the Tuscan court in the course of his life.

Pietro Benvenuti painted numerous portraits for clients from all over Europe, but also religious historical representations and decorative frescoes . In his art he was a fanatical supporter of academic conventionalism and a pioneer of Italian Davidism . In general, the influence of Jacques-Louis Davids shaped the painter all his life. The contemporary and traveling writer Stendhal saw Benvenuti's paintings and condemned them as “cold and dispassionate”. Even with today's art lovers, however, Benvenuti's academic-classical style is still very popular. Numerous works by Benvenuti have been preserved, most of them are in the public galleries of the Tuscan cities, many paintings are in private ownership.

The sculptor Antonio Canova was close friends with Benvenuti. In 1929 Pietro Benvenuti was elected an honorary member ( Honorary NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
