Giuseppe Bezzuoli (born November 28, 1784 in Florence ; † September 13, 1855 there ) was an Italian history and portrait painter .

life and work

Bezzuoli worked and studied in the studio of the history painter Luigi Sabatelli and was later enrolled at the Florentine Academy . The young artist initially devoted himself entirely to history painting and was awarded a gold medal in 1811. Then he moved to Rome , where he studied the works of Raphael and copied his school from Athens . Subsequently, he turned away from academic classicism and joined the romantic school of France, whose tendencies he introduced into the Florentine school of painting. In 1814 he was appointed assistant professor at the Florentine Academy, and in 1816 he was appointed professor of drawing . In 1829 he became an assistant painter for painting , in 1844 he was finally appointed as the successor to the great Pietro Benvenuti as a full professor of painting. As such, he vehemently advocated painting on the living model as well as the special study of lighting effects.

As a creative artist, Bezzuoli was one of the most striking colorists of his time. He not only painted in oils , but also made frescoes , most of which are in Florence. His portraits and historical pictures are in museums and art collections across Europe.
