The Tuscan Military Order was founded in 1562 by Cosimo I de 'Medici to combat piracy and defend the faith; he was on December 22, 1817 by Grand Duke Ferdinand III. renewed and divided into four grades:

  • Prior Grand Cross,
  • Bali Grand Cross,
  • Commander and
  • Knights ( di giustizia and di grazia ).

Every nobleman of four ancestors, with a free income of 300 scudi from his property, was entitled to the medal, which was hereditary in the family if the knight donated a commander as a majorate .

The Cavalieri di grazia received such commendants for their services.

The decoration consists of an eight-pointed, red enamelled cross with a crown and golden lilies in the corners, which is worn on a red ribbon by the three first classes on the neck and by the knights in the buttonhole. The plaque is worn on the chest. Victor Emmanuel II revoked the order on November 16, 1859 .
