Josef Matěj Navrátil (born February 17, 1798 in Slaný ( German Schlan ), † April 21, 1865 in Prague ) was a Bohemian painter and decorator.

Life

The son of a craftsman moved with his family to Prague in 1801. In his father's workshop he learned the painting trade with his brother. On July 25, 1819, both were accepted because of their talents in the Bergler School at the Prague Academy . After the exam, he first worked as a decorator and painter, mainly painting the walls of town houses, castles and mansions. From 1832 he often traveled abroad, including Switzerland, Germany, France and Belgium. He made sketches of landscapes, which he later used in his studio as a template for his pictures.

In 1850 he was elected chairman of the unity of visual artists. In 1861 he suffered a stroke and had to stop painting. He lived the rest of his life in loneliness, poverty and oblivion.

Works

Navrátil loved the mountains, lakes, rivers, and nature in general, which he immortalized in his murals. His architectural paintings are true to size, the images carefully crafted and smooth. Cold tones predominate, a mixture of Rococo with the Biedermeier style, romanticism and realism .

He was one of the leading artists only after creating his figural compositions and still lifes (pears, fox hunts, company at the table, portrait of an actress or young mother with child).

His wall paintings can still be seen today in:
