Joseph Thamm (illustrator)

Joseph Thamm (born March 18, 1804 in Habelschwerdt , district of Habelschwerdt ; † July 11, 1865 ) was a German illustrator , painter and author from the County of Glatz , as well as the editor of a history of the city of Habelschwerdt illustrated by him .

Life

In 1822 Thamm wandered with a friend through southern Germany, Switzerland and Italy and during this trip, of which he left an illustrated travel diary, stayed in Rome, among other places. In order to make a living, he entered the public service as city secretary in the district town of Habelschwerdt. From 1855 he successfully dealt with the introduction and rationalization of silkworm breeding in the Habelschwerdter area, which was operated there at least temporarily.

Thamm, who acquired his skill in painting, both in the oil , watercolor , ink and pastel manner , as an autodidact, preferred to depict landscape motifs and cityscapes. He also worked as a porcelain painter .

He was best known as the editor of the history of the city of Habelschwerdt , which he provided with views and a site plan . He illustrated another chronicle of his hometown, known only from studying the sources, with depictions of earlier buildings, costumes and religious processions, as well as secular procession and the like.

In addition, he wrote a description of Bad Langenau and its healing springs as well as several comedies and the Singspiel Der Glatzer in Berlin, written in the Mittelwald dialect .
