Christian Heinrich Grosch
Christian Heinrich Grosch (born January 21, 1801 in Copenhagen , † May 4, 1865 in Christiania ) was a Danish-Norwegian architect.
Life
After his first drawing training by his father, the painter Heinrich August Grosch (1763–1843), Grosch learned from 1819–1820 at the royal drawing school. 1820-1824 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After completing his studies, he went to Christiania, where he worked as an assistant at HDF Linstow for the planning of the new palace.
In 1827 (or 1828) Grosch became stadskonduktør (comparable to a building director), an office he held until his death. From 1824 to 1840 he also taught at the royal drawing school.
Important works in Oslo are the stock exchange (1826-28), the building for the Norges Bank (1828), the main building of the university and the old Christiania Theater on Bankplassen (1837). In 1838 he sent the draft for the university to Karl Friedrich Schinkel, whom he held in high regard, to Berlin . The execution took place according to the edited plans between 1841 and 1854. In addition, Grosch designed numerous churches and public buildings also outside Oslo, for example the Valbergtårnet (Valberg Tower) in Stavanger (1850–53) and the cathedral in Tromsø .
