The Valbergtårnet is a former fire watchtower in the Norwegian Stavanger .
The tower
The tower, built from 1850 to 1853 according to a design by Christian Heinrich Grosch , is located on the Valberget , a mountain in the Storhaug district , directly at the port of Stavanger . The old watchtower had stood there since 1659 and had to be demolished due to its dilapidation. The tower has a height of 26.66 m. The construction costs amounted to 9,000 speciedaler . The tower offers a view of the entire city at that time, so that fire could be detected early and the residents could be notified with bells and cannon shots . Other fire warning systems made the tower redundant and in 1922 it was abandoned as a fire watch tower. Today it houses the City Guard Museum and can be used as a lookout tower .
The neo-Romanesque building is octagonal, made of gneiss , and has arched windows that are framed in copper ; the roof is also made of copper.
