history
Denmark-Norway was a confederation between Denmark and Norway from 1380 to 1814 under Danish rule. The Danish King was also King of Norway. The history of coins and currencies in both countries is therefore closely interwoven.
A speciedaler was originally a large silver coin with a weight of almost 30 grams and a silver content of 87.5%. Later banknotes to the value of one or more speciedalers were also printed. Initially, the value of 6 specialty coins was 96 schillings (Danish / Norwegian: skilling ). Due to the decreasing silver content of the Skillings, the Speciedaler were often traded for 120 shillings. Under Carl III. Johan the value was officially set at 120 shillings or 5 places (1 place = 24 shillings). The first Norwegian speciedaler was minted in Denmark . Norwegian production began in Christiania (now Oslo ) in 1628 and continued at the Kongsberg Royal Mint from 1686 to 1873 .
In 1778 the entire Danish state, which at that time also included the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein , issued a specie coin worth 60 schillings from the Schleswig-Holstein Courant .
In 1814 Norway gained independence from Denmark. With the Scandinavian currency reform in 1873, Denmark and Sweden took over the crown and Øre . Norway followed and joined the monetary union in 1875. Thus 1 speciedaler was equivalent to four Norwegian kroner . Taking the consumer price index into account, 1 speciedaler would have been worth 195 Norwegian kroner in 2009.
