Johann Jakob Frey (born January 27, 1813 in Basel , † September 30, 1865 in Frascati ; resident in Basel) was a Swiss landscape painter .

Live and act

Johann Jakob Frey was born in 1813 as the son of the etcher Samuel Frey (1785–1836) and learned painting from his father during his youth . In addition, Frey learned from the Swiss draftsman Hieronymus Hess .

He later moved to Paris and then in 1834 to Munich , where he was supported by the patron Emilie Linder , which finally enabled Frey to move again, this time to Rome . He then settled permanently in Rome. There he made the acquaintance of personalities such as Joseph Anton Koch , Johann Christian Reinhart , Carl Philipp Fohr and Johann Martin von Rohden . From 1842 to 1845 he took part in the Prussian expedition to Egypt .

He was buried on the Cimitero Acattolico in Rome, where the tombstone with the portrait relief created by his friend Ferdinand Schlöth has been preserved to this day.

Works

Frey traveled a lot through Italy , especially in and around Rome, to make landscape sketches there . In his studio he then developed paintings from these sketches . He also traveled to other countries outside Italy, for example Spain and Egypt , to make sketches for later works.

Frey's painting style is based on that of Joseph Koch or Franz Horny . They often show a foreground that is rich in detail and true to detail , on which elements such as curvy footpaths or rivers can often be seen, which direct the viewer's focus into the drawn distance.
