Abel-Anastase Germain (born April 1, 1833 in Saint-Sylvain , Département Calvados , † November 12, 1897 in Coutances ) was Bishop of Coutances.

Life

He attended the small seminary in Caen and studied theology in Bayeux . Ordained a priest in 1857, he became a clergyman at the Lyceum in Bayeux and in 1870 pastor of the cathedral (archpriest). Five years later, on November 19, 1875, appointed Bishop of Coutances by decree of the President of the Republic, he received papal confirmation on January 28, 1876, and was consecrated on March 19 in Bayeux Cathedral by Cardinal de Bonnechose .

Bishop Germain did his best to promote public worship in his diocese, such as pilgrimages and processions. He was also a gifted preacher who gave the funeral orations for many important churchmen of his time, including a. the Cardinals de Bonnechose and Guibert and the Bishops Hasley , Ducellier , Rousselet , Lecoq and Trégaro . He also opened the process of beatification of Maria Magdalena (Julie) Postel , the founder of the School Sisters, whose heroic degree of virtue was recognized during his episcopate.

The Pope distinguished Bishop Germain with the appointment of papal assistant throne and Roman count. He was also honorary canon of several dioceses, u. a. Autun, Bayeux, Besançon, Bordeaux, Nantes and Rennes.

He died of an infection in 1897.
