Joseph Hippolyte Guibert OMI (born December 13, 1802 in Aix-en-Provence , † July 8, 1886 in Paris ) was a French religious, cardinal and archbishop of Paris .

Life

Joseph Hippolyte Guibert was the son of the farmer Pierre Guibert. At the age of 17 he joined in 1819 the seminary of Aix one that at the time of the Sulpizianern was performed. At the beginning of 1823 he joined the Community of Missionaries of Provence and made perpetual vows on December 29, 1823 . He was ordained a deacon a year later on December 18, 1824, and ordained a priest on August 14, 1825 in Marseille by Bishop Charles Fortuné of Mazenod .

He was novice master of the community from 1826 to 1828 and superior of the house in Notre-Dame du Laus from 1829 to 1834 . In 1835 he was appointed superior of the Ajaccio seminary . He held this office for six years until he was appointed bishop of Viviers on July 30, 1841 at the age of 39 and was ordained bishop on March 11, 1842 in Marseille by Eugene von Mazenod . Co-consecrators were Bishop Toussaint Casanelli d'Istria and Bishop Pierre Chatrousse . Within five years he visited all the parishes in his diocese and founded a number of diocesan communities, as well as improving the formation of the clergy.

Bishop Guibert refused the episcopal seats of Avignon , Grenoble and Aix before being named Archbishop of Tours on February 4, 1857 . He also visited all the parishes in the Diocese of Tours. He was heavily involved in the reconstruction of St. Martin's Basilica . He always defended the rights of the Holy See and attended the First Vatican Council as a council father .

On October 27, 1871 he was by Pope Pius IX. appointed Archbishop of Paris . In 1872 he initiated the planning for the construction of the Sacré-Cœur basilica on Montmartre . In 1875 he founded the Catholic University, later the Institut Catholique . On December 22, 1873 he was by Pope Pius IX. created cardinal and was assigned the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina . He took part in the conclave of 1878 , in which Leo XIII. was elected Pope. He was a popular advisor in the French episcopate. Politically, too, he did not hesitate to express himself wherever he found it necessary.

Throughout his life, the strict ascetic remained connected to the Congregation of Oblate Missionaries and was always an advisor to its founder and Superior General Eugene von Mazenod and his successor Joseph Fabre OMI.

Joseph Hippolyte Guibert died on July 8, 1886 and was buried in the Sacré-Cœur basilica.
