Notre-Dame du Laus (from Latin laus “glorification”, spoken: “Loh”, more rarely: “Lohs”) has been a French Marian apparition and pilgrimage site in Saint-Étienne-le-Laus , Hautes-Alpes , Diocese of Gap since 1664 and Embrun.

history

The mystic Benoîte Rencurel had apparitions of the Virgin Mary , of Christ on the cross and of saints from 1664 (as a young shepherdess) and until her death (1718) in the French Southern Alps (southeast of Gap ) . The then Archbishop of Embrun , Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade , had a church built and invited the Jesuits to settle in the area. In 2008, the Bishop of Gap , Jean-Michel di Falco Leandri, recognized the apparitions on behalf of the Church. The congregation of the missionary priests of Sainte-Garde followed in 1712 ( expelled by the French Revolution in 1791 ) to support the pilgrimage , which began quickly . In 1805 the Bishop of Digne bought the complex back and in 1818 installed the congregation of priests of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary founded shortly before by Saint Eugene of Mazenod in Aix-en-Provence , which was replaced by diocesan priests in 1841. In 2008 the Sisters of Adoration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus settled in Montmartre . The Bishop of Gap is currently collecting funds for the construction of a larger pilgrimage church.

The spirit of the place

The subjects of the revelations were the sinfulness of men, the necessity of repentance, repentance and confession , and the mercy of God towards those who repent of their own free will. The Virgin Mary was perceived by Benoîte Rencurel as the reconciler of people with God. In the service of this reconciliation, Benoîte put herself all her life with great personal commitment. The place of pilgrimage and prayer is therefore still under the sign of reconciliation ( réconciliation ) of the individual with God and fellow human beings, but also with himself, with his body, with his personal life story, with time and with nature. It receives more than 150,000 visitors annually. Jean Guitton was one of the most ardent admirers of Notre-Dame du Laus .

documentation

Four educated contemporary witnesses of the 17th and 18th centuries put their observations and survey results on 1,800 manuscript pages, which were critically viewed, sorted and copied in 1850 and have since been available as "authentic copies of the manuscripts". This (also secular historical) important source was first published by Roger de Labriolle (1907–1988) in the 1977 work Benoîte. La bergère de Notre-Dame du Laus (The Shepherdess of Notre-Dame du Laus) was evaluated and made the subject of a scientific colloquium in 1978, on the basis of which the beatification process of Benoîte Rencurel was resumed in 1981 .

Pilgrimage church

Notre-Dame du Laus

The current building is an extension of the church, built in 1666, which only included the current nave and a bell gable . Each pilgrim brought a stone up from the valley, and in 1669 the church was completed. The imposing bell tower adjoining the building was added in 1834 by the Oblate Fathers of the Immaculate Virgin Mary , who were in charge of the sanctuary. The church was founded on March 18, 1892 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the dignity of a minor basilica .
