Charles Fortuné von Mazenod (born April 27, 1749 in Aix-en-Provence , † February 22, 1840 in Marseille ) was a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Fortuné von Mazenod was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1749. He was the uncle of St. Eugene of Mazenod . He studied theology at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Aix , at the St. Sulpice seminary and at the Sorbonne in Paris . He was ordained a priest in Beauvais on April 6, 1776 . In the same year he became Vicar General of Glandèves and soon afterwards Vicar General of Aix . In the course of the French Revolution he had to flee into exile. His path took him to Turin and from there, together with other members of his family, to Venice , Naples and Palermo . In 1801 he refused the bishopric of Avignon in order not to be obliged to swear allegiance to Napoleon . When he was in 1817 by Louis XVIII. was appointed Bishop of Marseilles , it took several letters from his nephew Eugene of Mazenod to convince him to accept this office. He did so in the end, but on the condition that Eugene von Mazenod and Henry Tempier become vicars general of Marseille.

From 1823 to 1837 he worked as Bishop of Marseille, with a special focus on the formation of the clergy. He entrusted the leadership of the diocesan seminary to the community of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary . In 1837 he resigned from his position as bishop. He was succeeded by his nephew and previous vicar general Eugen von Mazenod. Fortuné von Mazenod died on February 22nd, 1840 in Marseille, his grave is in the crypt of the cathedral of Marseille .
