Paul Aust (born August 22, 1866 in Bad Reinerz , Glatz district , province of Silesia ; † September 4, 1934 in Hermsdorf am Kynast , today a district of Jelenia Góra , Lower Silesia) was a German landscape painter , graphic artist and writer .

Life

Aust first studied natural sciences , especially pharmacy, at the universities of Berlin and Erlangen , where he received his doctorate in 1896 with contributions to the knowledge of the metamorphic limestone of the Fichtelgebirge .

From 1900 to 1907 he worked as a pharmacist and owner of the city pharmacy in Ostritz (Upper Lusatia).

He later turned to painting and studied from 1907 to 1910 at the Dresden Art Academy and the Munich Academy . From 1910 he lived in Hermsdorf am Kynast.

In 1922, together with Franz von Jackowski, he founded the “Association of Visual Artists St. Lukas” in Schreiberhau in Lower Silesia ( Giant Mountains ). On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the artists' association honored him with a special exhibition.

Aust married Marie Kappelt (born November 6, 1867) in Heidersdorf (Silesia) in 1895 .

In his work he devoted himself to the landscapes of his Silesian homeland, which he depicted subtly in a poetic realism. He was also known for his designs for bookplates .
