Christian von der Emden
Christian von der Emden , sometimes also Christian van der Emden (born August 3, 1796 in Frankfurt am Main , † March 31, 1869 in Bonn ), was a German builder who shaped the cityscape of Bonn in the 19th century.
Life
Von der Emden was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1796, the son of a master shoemaker. Nothing is known about his training. In 1819, Helfrich Bernhard Hundeshagen came to Bonn from Emden . Von der Emden was employed by the architect and artist as an assistant and also lived with him between 1819 and 1845. After 1822 von der Emden began to work more and more independently, as Hundeshagen's eccentric demeanor made communication with the clients difficult.
On December 15, 1845, von der Emden received the “permit for independent commercial operations as a private builder without prior examination” from the Ministry of the Interior. In the 1840s, von der Emden became one of the city's “leading builders”. According to his plans, in addition to numerous private villas and residential buildings, the first Bonn city theater and the (Catholic) St. Johannes Hospital and the (Protestant) Friedrich Wilhelm Stift were the first two hospitals in the city. He also built a private chapel for Baron Ludwig Maximilian von Rigal-Grunland .
