The Rigal Chapel (2007)

The Rigal'sche Chapel is a Protestant chapel in the center of Bad Godesberg , a district of Bonn . It is located on the corner of Kurfürstenallee and Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse opposite the so-called “Rigal'schen Wiese” immediately north of the former Chinese embassy . It is used by the Evangelical Johannes-Kirchengemeinde Bad Godesberg, the Evangelical Francophone Congregation as well as the Regional Convention West of the High Church of St. John's Brotherhood and, since July 2017, by the initiative "Prayer House Bonn".

The Rigal'sche chapel stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The building was built between 1856 and 1858 as a private chapel by Baron Ludwig Maximilian von Rigal-Grunland in connection with the neighboring palace-like villa, Schloss Rigal, based on a design by the architect Christian von der Emden (1796–1869). It was the first independent Protestant church in Godesberg and in what is now Bonn's urban area on the left bank of the Rhine. The foundation stone for the new building took place on 11 June 1856, the consecration of the chapel took place on 1 July 1858. On 17 October 1860 gave Rigal-Grunland a church of the Protestant parish Bonn; the previous branch community of Godesberg became independent in June 1861 and only came into the possession of the chapel including the property and a capital for the maintenance of the building through a donation on August 29, 1874.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the roof turret of the chapel was damaged by shell bullets on March 8, 1945. On November 20, 1966, an eternity Sunday , the last service of the Protestant parish took place in the chapel. In 1983 the roof turret was demolished as a late consequence of the war damage and then rebuilt true to the original by January 1985.

architecture

The chapel is a simple brick building with partly Romanesque and partly more modern forms, the round-arched facade elements and surrounding block frieze . The top of the gable protrudes as a console . The floor plan of the church is rectangular, but is complemented by a five-sided apse , which is closed on the inside, and two square extensions that resemble transepts . The original equipment of the chapel has largely been preserved. Their neo-Gothic seating dates from 1884–1888. The patronage boxes on the side arms of the chapel are remarkable .

On the east side of the chapel, to the left of the entrance portal, there is a crossroads that presumably dates back to the 18th century and was moved here from what was then Deutschherrenstrasse in front of Rigal Castle in the course of the construction of the Chinese embassy between 1982 and 1984.
